A BRIEF ACTIVITIES AND HISTORIC SUMMARY
Airdrie Curling Club serves the City of Airdrie curlers and surrounding district.
Well over 500 members enjoy this modern and well-run club. With 64 Mixed teams,
36 Mens, 30 Evening Ladies and 14 Afternoon Ladies, 18 Super League and about 50 Youth
members the League Representatives are kept busy all winter. Recently a very active member in his 80's started a Stick league. They have had a successful year and are sure to
grow in the future.
The club has 8 sheets of ice for weekday club curling. The weekends are reserved
for Bonspiels and Outside Ice Rentals. The large lobby and lounge are open for rental for
special occasions year-round. With a superb Snack Bar and very capable ice makers it
truly is an outstanding club.
The club has hosted numerous successful Provincial Playdown events over the
years, which has helped bring it into the spotlight on occasion. The club has it's own
qualified S.A.C.A.
Sanctioned Oficials for these events to ensure they are su&essful.
There is always a good turnout for the annual Mens, Ladies and Mixed Bonspiels as well
as the ever popular Juniors. These events are often full to capacity.
A group of dedicated full time board members as well as numerous volunteers
operate the club. There are always summer preparation activities by these
people to ensure the club is ready to go when the curlers arrive around the end of September for
another season of enjoyment for all. A superb Banquet and
Awards Night cap off the
season in early April to honor the top teams and say So Long to friends for the short
summer break and to look forward to another
season.
In history, the club opened on an outdoor ice rink in 1944 when players brought
their own rocks, moved indoors in 1945 to the present day Post Office site and
under the motivation of the executive members such as then Mayor Darrel Bennett, Bernie Knittle,
Gord Delair and A1 Williamson [Ice Maker Paul Rabel] moved
to the present site built in
1978 and occupied in 1979 with 4 sheets of ice. Expansion in 1980 added 4 more sheets
and a second ice plant.
In 2006 all Equipment and Compressors were replaced and a complete new Water
Treatment and Flooding system installed. This has added more capacity and
even better
ice to an already fine facility. In recent years many improvements have been made such
as renovation of Washrooms and Dressing Rooms, the entire
Lobby and Bar Area,
Viewing Area windows, new carpet and Cameras with T.V. Monitors for far end
views. We have recently hired a full time Manager to reply to
the
ever growing needs.
Board Members have attended workshops Presented by the Canadian Curling
Association with Jack Bowman presenting to further
improve
the operation and
efficiency of the club which is now running at near capacity and to prepare to deal with
rapidly the expanding population of the city.
